So Pilate then took Jesus, and flogged him. The soldiers twisted thorns into a crown, and put it on his head, and dressed him in a purple garment. They kept saying, \u201cHail, King of the Jews!\u201d and they kept slapping him.
\nThen Pilate went out again, and said to them, \u201cBehold, I bring him out to you, that you may know that I find no basis for a charge against him.\u201d
\nJesus therefore came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment. Pilate said to them, \u201cBehold, the man!\u201d
\nWhen therefore the chief priests and the officers saw him, they shouted, saying, \u201cCrucify! Crucify!\u201d
\nPilate said to them, \u201cTake him yourselves, and crucify him, for I find no basis for a charge against him.\u201d
\nThe Jews answered him, \u201cWe have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.\u201d
\nWhen therefore Pilate heard this saying, he was more afraid. He entered into the Praetorium again, and said to Jesus, \u201cWhere are you from?\u201d But Jesus gave him no answer. Pilate therefore said to him, \u201cAren\u2019t you speaking to me? Don\u2019t you know that I have power to release you, and have power to crucify you?\u201d Jesus answered, \u201cYou would have no power at all against me, unless it were given to you from above. Therefore he who delivered me to you has greater sin.\u201d
\nAt this, Pilate was seeking to release him, but the Jews cried out, saying, \u201cIf you release this man, you aren\u2019t Caesar\u2019s friend! Everyone who makes himself a king speaks against Caesar!\u201d
\nWhen Pilate therefore heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called \u201cThe Pavement\u201d, but in Hebrew, \u201cGabbatha.\u201d Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, at about the sixth hour.* He said to the Jews, \u201cBehold, your King!\u201d
\nThey cried out, \u201cAway with him! Away with him! Crucify him!\u201d
\nPilate said to them, \u201cShall I crucify your King?\u201d
\nThe chief priests answered, \u201cWe have no king but Caesar!\u201d
\nSo then he delivered him to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus and led him away. He went out, bearing his cross, to the place called \u201cThe Place of a Skull\u201d, which is called in Hebrew, \u201cGolgotha\u201d, where they crucified him, and with him two others, on either side one, and Jesus in the middle. Pilate wrote a title also, and put it on the cross. There was written, \u201cJESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.\u201d Therefore many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek. The chief priests of the Jews therefore said to Pilate, \u201cDon\u2019t write, \u2018The King of the Jews,\u2019 but, \u2018he said, I am King of the Jews.\u2019\u201d
\nPilate answered, \u201cWhat I have written, I have written.\u201d<\/p>\n
